# What Is Actually in Boba? A Parent's Guide

![A cup of whisked green matcha latte on a wooden table](https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1515823064-d6e0c04616a7?auto=format&fit=crop&w=1600&q=70)

## Before you approve boba for a class party, it helps to know what's actually in the cup.

Parents ask good questions about boba because most of them have never had to think about it before their kid's [school](/schools) started serving it. Here's a straight answer, ingredient by ingredient, without guessing at anything not confirmed.

One thing you can stop wondering about right away: bubble tea and boba tea are the same drink, and the name tells you nothing about what is in it. [Here is where both names came from](/blog/bubble-tea-vs-boba-tea) if you are curious.

## What are the little balls in boba actually made of?

Tapioca pearls are made from cassava root starch, not gelatin or anything animal-derived. That makes them naturally gluten-free and dairy-free on their own. If a child has a gluten sensitivity but not a broader allergy concern, the tapioca itself typically isn't the issue, though you should still confirm with your specific vendor since cross-contact during prep is a separate question from the ingredient itself.

## Does boba tea contain dairy?

Milk teas do contain dairy by default, since "milk tea" means tea brewed with milk added. That covers drinks like Classic Milk Tea, Thai Tea, Taro Milk Tea, and similar. The good news for parents managing a dairy allergy or lactose sensitivity: any drink can typically be made dairy-free at no extra charge, since it's just a milk substitution. Oat milk tends to hold up better against strong-brewed tea than almond milk does, so if your vendor offers a choice, that's worth knowing.

## What about the fruit teas, do those have dairy?

Fruit teas are generally built on a tea and fruit base rather than milk, so they're less likely to carry dairy by default, but always confirm the specific recipe with your vendor rather than assuming. Recipes vary shop to shop, and "fruit tea" isn't a regulated category with one fixed formula.

## Is any topping something I should specifically ask about?

Yes. Pudding topping is egg-based, which matters directly for any child with an egg allergy. Other common toppings, like classic boba, popping boba, crystal boba, lychee jelly, aloe, and rainbow jelly, are generally lower-risk from an ingredient standpoint, but "generally" isn't the same as "confirmed for your child." Always ask your specific caterer what's in their toppings and how they're prepped, especially around cross-contact with other stations.

## Does boba tea have caffeine?

Depends entirely on whether the drink is brewed from real tea. Drinks made with green, black, oolong, or jasmine tea contain caffeine. Strawberry Milk and Lychee Refresher don't use a tea base at all, so they're caffeine-free, and Brown Sugar Boba Milk is traditionally made without tea too. Matcha is on the higher end for caffeine, not the lower end, so treat it like a strong coffee rather than a mild kid drink.

## Can a vendor guarantee a drink is completely allergen-free?

No reputable vendor should promise that, and you should be cautious of one that does. Shared prep space, shared equipment, and cross-contact are real considerations for any food service operation, including a mobile boba cart. This isn't specific to any one caterer, it's true of food service generally. If your child has a serious allergy, the right move is a direct conversation with the vendor about your event specifically, not a general ingredient list like this one. This guide can tell you what's typically in the cup. It can't tell you what happened in a specific kitchen on a specific day.

## What's a sign a vendor takes allergies seriously?

They ask you questions back. A vendor who immediately says "don't worry, it's all fine" without asking what the actual allergy is hasn't engaged with the specifics. One who asks "is this a dairy allergy, a gluten sensitivity, or something more serious like a life-threatening allergy" is treating it like the medical-adjacent issue it actually is.

## Ask your vendor this

1. Which drinks and toppings contain dairy, egg, or gluten by default?
2. Can specific drinks be made dairy-free, and is there a charge for that?
3. What's your process for preventing cross-contact for a child with a serious allergy?
4. Which toppings, if any, contain egg or other common allergens?
5. If we have a student with a severe allergy, can you talk directly with a parent or nurse before the event?

## What to do next

If any child at your event has a serious allergy, don't rely on a general guide, including this one. Get your school nurse or the parent directly in touch with the caterer before the event, and get the specifics in writing.
